I was the first Kingdom Arts and Sciences Champion of An Tir. Although this was a great honor, the persons who set up this whole thing stopped when the actual Championship happened. No one actually had a clue as to what I should DO as an Arts and Sciences Champion. The Arts and Sciences Champion sees the end of one reign, the whole of the next, and the beginning of the third in his/her term of office. You are dealing with three different reigns. You must ask each one what his/her interpretation of your office is. Some come up with interesting things for you to do. Others have no clue.
I found the best way to utilize my skills and "fame" was to judge at other champions' contests and to mentor others throughout the year to enter the Kingdom Championship.
I mentored all three finalists for the year following my own. Your own experiences are the best skill you can offer to potential candidates. This also ensure quality entrants in the following years.
I had a fabulous year when I was Champion. I received a flattering amount of attention from all over. I was asked to judge at many championships and contests. I was able to accompany my King to Pennsic that year, and I won the Arts point at the Border Raid War.
I had recently stepped down as Landed Baroness of Madrone and it was balm to an otherwise open wound. I will always remember the many kindnesses done to me as Champion, and it will always be one of the best memories I hold of my time in the SCA. This is why I still mentor others to enter this competition, because of the happy time I had.
